– Principal and Vice Principal – Thank you so much for welcoming me and helping me with all the things I wanted to do and create for our students. Thank you for believing in me, supporting me and treating me like a member of the Sannam Family from the very beginning. Your leadership at this school is unquestionably one of the biggest reasons for its success. I will never forget your dedication to 산남고 and your incredible kindness to me.

여러분, 감사합니다.

교장, 교감 선생님. 저를 환영해주시고, 학생들을 위해 저에게 필요했던 것들을 도와주셔서 감사합니다. 제가 오자마자 저를 믿고, 지원해주시고, 산남가족 일원으로 맞아주셔서 감사합니다. 산남고에서 두 분의 리더십은 분명 우리학교 성공의 큰 이유 중 하나입니다. 산남고를 위한 두 분의 헌신과 저에 대한 큰 친절을 잊지 못할 것입니다.

-Mr. Park – If I had been asked to invent the perfect co-teacher, I could not have imagined anyone better than you. It has been a pleasure to get to know you over the course of this year and I deeply appreciate all the hard work you have done on my behalf. I will never forget your patience, kindness, strength of character, integrity and most of all, your sense of humor. You may be forgetful but I promise you are unforgettable!

박해순 선생님. 만약 제가 완벽한 동료교사를 찾아야 했다면, 선생님보다 더 나은 분은 상상할 수도 없었겠죠. 올해 선생님을 알게 되어 기쁘고, 제 대신 해주셨던 힘든 일에 대해 정말 감사합니다. 선생님의 인내, 친절, 의지의 힘, 진실성, 그리고 무엇보다도 선생님의 유머감각을 잊지 못할 것입니다. 선생님이 잊으실 수는 있지만, 선생님을 잊지는 않을 거라 약속합니다.

-English teachers – I am so grateful for your warm welcome, willingness to help me always, and immediate acceptance of me into the Sannam Family. Thank you for teaching me about Korea, having incredible 눈치, and for making this school community feel like a home away from home. I will never forget you and I hope we keep in touch!

영어 선생님 여러분. 저를 따뜻하게 환영하고, 항상 기꺼이 도와주시고, 산남가족으로 받아주셔서 정말 감사합니다. 한국에 대해서, 굉장한 ‘눈치’를 가지는 것에 대해서, 집에서 떨어져 있지만 이 학교 공동체를 집처럼 편안하게 만들어 주신데 대해서 감사합니다. 잊지 못할 겁니다. 연락하고 지낼 수 있기를 바랍니다.

-All teachers, administrators, and janitorial staff – Thank you so much for the incredible warmth and kindness you have shown me. Thank you for having patience when my Korean level was too low for me to understand what you needed me to do. Thank you for laughing quietly along with me when my big laugh filled the 3 층교무실. Thank you for all the ways you have shown me that you care.

모든 선생님, 행정실 직원분들, 청소 아주머니들. 저에게 큰 따뜻함과 친절을 베풀어주셔서 감사합니다. 한국말을 잘 못해 선생님들 말씀을 잘 이해하지 못했을 때 인내심을 보여주신데 대해 감사합니다. 3층 교무실에서 제가 큰소리로 웃었을 때 조용히 함께 웃어주셔서 감사합니다. 저를 아껴주신 모든 모습들, 감사합니다.

 

 

-Students!! -- I want thank you all and tell you how much I love you and am going to miss you. Seeing your smiling faces in the hallways each day, teaching you English through global topics each week, watching you grow and mature over the year that I have been here, and getting to know you as amazing young women, have made me one of the happiest people on earth this past year. Even though I am looking forward to working at the White House next year, I will be thinking about you and missing you every day for a long, long time. As I told you, if you plan to visit New York or Washington D.C. please let me know so we can meet!

학생 여러분! 고맙고, 사랑합니다. 그리고 그리울 거예요. 매일 복도에서 여러분들의 웃는 얼굴을 보고, 매주 지구촌 주제로 영어를 가르치고, 여기 있는 한해 동안 여러분이 자라고 성장하는 것을 보고, 여러분이 놀라운 젊은 여성들이라는 것을 알게 되면서, 저는 지난 한해 동안 세계에서 가장 행복한 사람이었어요. 내년에 백악관에서 일하기를 손꼽아 기다리고 있지만, 오랫동안 매일매일 여러분이 생각나고 그리울 거예요. 제가 말했던 것처럼 뉴욕이나 워싱턴을 방문할 계획이 있으면 만날 수 있게 저에게 연락주세요.

I want to talk briefly about an important topic: your voice and self-ｅxpression.

 - The world is getting crowded. By 2020, there will be about 8 billion people on our planet. Earth’s resources will become more and more scarce and competition over them could become fierce. It will continue to be an exciting world with improvements in technology and increases in globalization and cross-cultural connectedness. But human kind will face new challenges in the decades ahead due to physical constraints on the lifestyles that we have become accustomed to living – a gas-guzzling, coal-burning, water-wasting, throw-away, materialistic lifestyleis not sustainable. We are beginning to notice the negative impacts of our lifestyles on the environment, animals and people around us as sea levels rise, plants and animals lose their homes, and global warming speeds up. Climate change can cause social, political and economic problems to get worse as well. The poorest of the poor and the world’s most vulnerable people (often women and children) will continue to be burdened by global inequalities and will likely be the first to suffer when resources start to run out.

 여러분의 목소리와 자기표현이라는 중요한 주제에 대해 간단히 말할게요.

세상은 점점 복잡해지고 있죠. 2020년이면 지구에는 80억 명 가량의 사람들이 있을 겁니다. 지구의 자원은 점점 부족해질 것이고, 경쟁은 더 심해질 겁니다. 기술의 발달과 세계화 및 문화교류의 증가로 계속해서 흥미 있는 세상이 될 것입니다. 하지만 인류는 다가올 수십 년간 우리가 익숙해진 라이프스타일 때문에 도전에 직면할 것입니다. 왜냐하면 기름을 낭비하고, 석탄을 태우고, 물을 소비하고, 쓰레기를 버리는 물질적인 생활방식은 지속 가능하지 않기 때문이죠. 해수면이 상승하고, 동식물이 서식지를 잃고, 지구온난화가 가속화되는 것처럼 우리 생활방식이 환경과 동물 그리고 우리 주변 사람들에게 부정적인 영향을 준다는 것을 알아차리고 있죠. 기후 변화는 또한 사회, 정치, 경제적 문제가 악화되게 할 수도 있습니다. 가장 가난한 사람들과 가장 취약한 사람들은 계속해서 세계의 불평등에 의해서 짐을 짊어지게 될 것이고, 자원이 고갈될 때 가장 먼저 고통 받게 될 것입니다.

-So how can we manage all of this and why am I talking to you about this today? Well, let me ask you a different question: Why do you study so hard in school and 야자? Is it so you can to go a good university? Although it’s important, I hope that’s not the only reason. Almost all of you have been my students so I know how big your hearts are, how smart your heads are and how deep your passion is. The fact is, we live in a world that needs your help and needs to hear YOUR voice. The world needs to hear the thoughts and opinions of caring, smart and passionate women more than ever before.

그래서 어떻게 우리가 이런 모든 문제를 해결할 수 있고, 저는 오늘 왜 이것에 대해서 얘기하고 있을까요? 다른 질문을 해보죠. 학교에서 왜 그렇게 열심히 공부하고 야자를 하나요? 좋은 대학에 가기 위해서 인가요? 그게 중요하지만, 그것이 유일한 이유는 아니길 바래요. 여기 있는 거의 모두가 제 학생들이었기 때문에 저는 여러분들의 마음이 얼마나 넓은지, 얼마나 똑똑한지, 열정이 얼마나 깊은지 압니다. 사실 우리는 여러분의 도움을 필요로 하고 여러분의 목소리를 들어야 하는 세상에 살고 있어요. 그전 어느 때보다도 더 세상은 배려심 있고, 영리하고, 열정 있는 여성들의 생각과 의견을 듣고자 합니다.

But right now, only a quarter of the world’s science researchers are women, only 2.8% of the largest companies are run by women CEOs, and only 1 in 10 heads of state is a woman. So there are a lot of big problems in this world, in which half of all people are female, and yet women’s voices are heard only a small fraction of the time!

하지만 현재 세계 과학 연구원들의 사분의 일만이 여성입니다. 대기업 CEO의 2.8%만이 여성이고, 열 개의 나라 중 한 나라 지도자만이 여성입니다. 그러므로 해서 절반이 여성인 이 세상에는 많은 큰 문제들이 있지만 여성의 목소리는 잠시만 들릴 뿐이죠.

I know you ladies are smart, caring and passionate. But that only matters if you have the most important ingredient of all: confidence to express yourself. No one is going to hear your ideas if YOU never have the courage to open your mouth and speak them. No one is going to listen to you if you do not even believe in the value of your own voice. No one is going to follow you if you cannot trust yourself to lead. Please, don’t waste this amazing education you are getting at Sannam High School. Don’t waste your compassion, intelligence and desire to change the world because you don’t have the confidence to express yourself. If you did that, you would be letting down not only yourself but also everyone in the world who could benefit from your help. You must believe in your dreams and in your voice in order to be a world leader! And find a spouse who cares as much about supporting you and your dreams as about his own. If you truly believe in your own self-worth, that’s what you’ll do.

저는 여러분들이 똑똑하고, 사려 깊고, 열정 있다는 것을 알죠. 하지만 그것은 가장 중요한 요소, 즉 자신을 표현하는 자신감을 가지고 있을 때만 중요한 것입니다. 입을 열고 말하는 용기가 없다면 아무도 여러분들의 생각을 듣지 않을 거예요. 여러분 스스로의 목소리가 가진 가치를 믿지 않는다면 아무도 여러분 말을 듣지 않을 거예요. 이끌어갈 자신을 믿지 않는다면 누구도 당신을 따르지 않을 테죠. 산남고등학교에서 받고 있는 이 놀라운 교육을 낭비하지 마세요. 자신을 표현할 자신이 없다고, 동정심과 지능, 그리고 세상을 바꾸고자 하는 바람을 낭비하지 마세요. 만약 그런다면, 여러분은 자신을 실망시킬 뿐만 아니라 여러분의 도움으로 혜택 받을 세상의 모든 사람들도 실망시킬 거예요. 세상의 리더가 되기 위해서 여러분의 꿈과 여러분의 목소리를 믿으세요. 그리고 자신의 꿈만큼 여러분과 여러분의 꿈을 지지해주는 배우자를 만나세요. 여러분의 자부심을 진심으로 믿는다면 그것이 바로 여러분이 할 일이죠.

 

- Sometimes, the world is a difficult and unfair place. But whenyou appreciate your own inner beauty and develop the confidence to express your vision for a better future, you begin to change the world. Believing in a better world starts with believing in yourself.

때때로 세상은 힘들고 불공평한 곳이죠. 하지만 여러분의 자신의 내적 아름다움을 알고, 더 나은 미래를 위해 비전을 표현할 자신감을 개발할 때 여러분을 세상을 바꾸기 시작하는 것입니다. 더 나은 세상을 믿는 것은 여러분 자신을 믿는 것에서 시작합니다.

-Good luck with your futures, please keep in touch, and know that I love you and will miss you more than you can possibly imagine. Thank you for one of the best years of my life. I will remember you forever.

여러분들의 미래에 행운이 함께 하기를 빌게요. 그리고 연락하고 지내요. 여러분이 상상하는 것보다 더 여러분을 사랑하고, 그리워할 거란 것을 알아줬으면 해요. 제 인생에서 최고의 일 년을 보낼 수 있었던 점 고마워요. 영원히 기억할게요.
